Gifford was a Welsh-born botanist and algologist.
Full biography
She was the daughter of Major George St John Gifford. Gifford lived in France, Jersey, and Cornwall, before settling in Minehead.
She was a close friend of Elizabeth Warren, a fellow Cornish botanist and marine algologist. Gifford was also noted as a correspondent of William Henry Harvey (1811-1866), a distinguished Irish botanist who specialised in algae.
In 1848, she published a book on seaweeds, The Marine Botanist; an introduction to the study of algology. Bolton Museum and Art Gallery and St Andrews University retain her collections of vascular plants and mosses.
