The daughter of Charles Fox, a Quaker scientist known for his contributions to Cornish mining and owner of Trebah estate.
Full biography
Juliet Fox married Edmund Backhouse MP and inherited Trebah on her father's death in 1876. The ensuing thirty years of Backhouse ownership of Trebah was a golden era for the gardens and the period in which it acquired its large collection of exotic plants and trees.
She is noted for her own collection of land and freshwater shells, in the Natural History section of the Royal Cornawall Polytechnic Society exhibition in 1842, for which she won a bronze medal.
